RedBrick 1.0
Workspaces and cohort creation
We are introducing a new concept called “workspaces.” These workspaces allow you to group similar projects and share data between them.
We also have a new data quality control layer called “cohort creation” (previously soft-launched), making it easy to manage your data with searching, filtering, and summarization tools. Read more about cohort creation here: https://redbrickai.com/cohort. You can still create standalone projects as you are currently used to.
Introducing RedBrick AI Boost
The RedBrick Boost add-on is a self-hosted container that enables tight integration of AI assistance tools into the RedBrick AI ecosystem. At launch, Boost supports two features: FAST’s server-side component and an automatic CT scan pre-segmentation model.
Since launching the FAST segmentation tool last year, we have received many requests for the ability to self-host this for privacy, compliance, or performance reasons. Starting July 2024, we will deprecate the RedBrick-hosted FAST and replace it entirely with Boost. Boost will be charged at an hourly metered rate to scale alongside your GPU usage. Get in touch with us at support@redbrickai.com to get started with Boost.
Updated contouring tool suite
We’ve upgraded our contour tool to offer many more refined annotation capabilities that don’t exist in other browser-based tools. With the new contouring tool, you will be able to:
-
Edit any mask created as a contour. Previously, an explicit rasterization step was required to go from contour to mask. Now, there is a fluid & automatic transition between contour and mask.
-
You can now hover over an arbitrary edge of a contour and interactively drag by a node to edit contours.
The existing contouring tool has the following changes to it:
-
The old contour tool is now the “interpolate tool,” allowing you to select an existing contour on two slices and interpolate between them.
-
The old pen tool is now the “3D scissors” tool, which retains only the best part of the pen tool for 3D viewing.
Updates to project workflows
Several long-awaited features have been added that unlock new capabilities for your project’s workflow.
-
Task clawback: Annotators who have finalized a task can now “clawback” if a reviewer has not started reviewing it. This should help with a typical scenario where an ADMIN had to go in and manually reject the task to send it back to an annotator.
-
Send task to stage action: You can now send any task to any stage at any time.
-
Archive stage: A new way to remove tasks from your projects without deleting them permanently. The most common use case would be discarding bad-quality images from the annotation queues.
-
Pre-review: A new review stage is now implemented at the beginning of your project to assess the quality of your data. Any rejected tasks will be moved to the archived stage.
-
Pre-label: A new duplicate annotation stage for miscellaneous use cases such as SDK pre-labeling.
-
Overwrite annotations SDK method: A new SDK method enables you to overwrite annotations at any point in the pipeline. This is useful in many active learning workflows.
-
Task duplication: A new project configuration that automatically duplicates your tasks. This allows you to have the same image annotated by multiple users and independently reviewed. This was a common shortcoming of our consensus/super truth framework.
Comments upgrades
Two highly requested changes to comments are being introduced: replying to comments and leaving comments on a specific annotation.
Other notable changes:
The following updates have been made to the system:
-
The process for raising an issue has been altered. All actions, such as responding to issue comments and sending the task back to the labeler, can now be performed within the annotation viewer.
-
The task details have been removed, and a tooltip with the same information will appear when you click on the stage indicator.
-
A webhook event has been implemented for “task-entered stage.”

Smart contour selection tool
When using the contour tool, hold down the “alt” or “option” keys to automatically select a region at the cursor.
Click to create a contour from that selection. For contours that have wavy edges, you can click and drag while holding “alt” to do some smoothing of the contour.

v2022.11.17.1 - Contour Tool
Contour Tool
Do you have a large organ to segment that doesn’t work well with thresholding? We have created the manual contour tool to allow you to quickly draw outlines of your regions, then interpolate between slices.
To activate it:
-
Select the tool from the top bar, or
-
Press the “k” hotkey, or
-
Search for the Contour tool in the command bar
The contour tool works very similarly to the pen tool. To get started click on a 2D viewport. You can click and drag or add points one click at a time. To close click the end node. You can then change the slice and repeat the process. If you skip slices, the in between slices will be interpolated.
To edit, simply hover near the edge of your region and click and drag to draw a new segment. Editing an interpolated contour will make that contour a key point that will be used for interpolation of the nearby slices.
Important: When you are done with your contour, you will need to convert it to a pixel mask. This process is called “rasterization.” There is a button on the right panel to do this, or you can use the Shift+Enter hotkey.

Single instance per series
In order to improve the annotation experience and the correctness of exported data, a single segmentation instance will now only apply on a single series. The series name will show up on the label object now.
Who does this affect
If you are labeling data on a single series (Xray or other images, Ultrasounds or other videos, or single CT scans) then this change will not affect you.
This will only affect you if you are annotating studies with multiple series AND you use the same instance on more than series (i.e. creating a single label object and annotating a T1 and T2 MRI scan).
What you need to do:
Nothing, however you will now need to create separate instances for each series with the same category that you want to annotate. Data that was annotated previously will be automatically processed to determine if which series have a given label.

Adds unique icon to labeler queue for identifying tasks

2022-10-15.1
The legacy annotation tool has been deactivated on all projects.
2022-10-13.1
Hanging protocols
Write a custom Javascript function to automatically set your annotation tool’s layout and viewing settings. Using Hanging protocols, you can standardize the viewing workflow/layout for all members of your team. Here is a list of some of the parameters you can define:
-
Layout dimensions.
-
Display position for a series.
-
Which reconstructed plane to display.
-
View flipping.
-
Intelligent Syncing activation by default.
Please read more about the hanging protocol, and how to activate it here.
Other changes
Remove “Large Data Mode” as a layout, this was a performance improvement to only render a single image when a series was larger than approximately 200 slices. Now, even large data will follow the hanging protocol script.
2022-10-12.1
Intellisync
Intellisync unifies support for synchronizing different series in a single task/study. Intellisync is available in tasks with more than 1 series/volume. When intellisync is activated, the scroll position is synchronized across series in your study.
Activate Intellisync from the viewport actions dropdown, or using ctrl/cmd + a
. Activate Intellisync for all volumes using cmd + shift + a
.
Read more about intellisync here.
Fixes
- Fix a bug where using the mouse for windowing while having label mirroring activated changed the window level/width for the wrong series.
v2022.10.11.1 - Adjust review percentage, disable automatic reassignment
v2022.10.11.1 - Adjust review percentage, disable automatic reassignment
You can now adjust the review percentage without needing to create a new project. This is available for all projects with a review stage under general settings of a given project. However, please note that for projects from before September 14 that contain a “task-random-filter” stage, this does not apply.
For teams that want to handle all task assignment manually, you can now disable our automatic assignment engine for each project stage individually.
